Best Time of Year To Visit: Summer is the best time hands down! There are areas where you can raft, wade and/or swim in the river. I think it would be nice to see in the winter when the river freezes.
I had selected this park randomly before, but it got pushed forward. Plus, Iβm currently focusing on parks in the western part of Calgary because I donβt have to go through the area where the Stampede is to get there. If what I have heard on Reddit is true about the Stampede, I would rather avoid the area. I managed to see three parks during Stampede time, but those are for separate posts. Additionally, for the next couple of months, I am going to prioritize parks that have gardens or are better for summer activities.
Entering and Exiting the Park:
We entered the park via Brittania Way after getting the bus to Elbow Drive. It was super scenic, but that wasnβt the best choice for my Mum. There was a long, gravel path down to the river where the park was, and there were lots of holes where she could have fallen. She has mobility issues and she had to hold the railing all the way down. Plus, I was always on standby to make sure she didnβt fall. I donβt recommend that entrance for people with mobility issues.
We left by Riverdale Ave SW, which was much better. It was a long walk, but it was a lovely neighbourhood! It was a higher-income area, but I had never seen so many trees and greenery in that type of neighbourhood! Itβs like every personβs house was its own mini-park. Normally, I find areas like that to be rather sterile in terms of greenery. For instance, I have never seen trees line the streets and dull, manicured lawns. I used to see those areas and be like, βKeep your boring houses!β I was stunned to see how beautiful Riverdale Ave is! Plus, I appreciated the cooling effect from the tree-lined street. I have a thing for tree-lined streets. Thereβs something relaxing and pleasant about them. Anyway, back to the park!
Park Features and Highlights:
I could see from where we entered that there were a lot of families wading, rafting, swimming and doing other water activities in the Elbow River. We crossed the bridge, and as we walked along the path, we saw there were areas with picnic tables that allowed barbecuing. Apparently, you can rent them for parties or events. I also noticed a play area for the kids. There were some trails peeling off from the main trail, but clearly, you donβt go to this park for the trails. There were areas where dogs are allowed to be unleashed too. Of course, they want to splash around.
The Best Part:
Mum and I went wading in the water. Let me tell you, it was the best river I have ever immersed myself in. It was clear and had this mountain freshness. You could tell it came from Rocky Mountain snowmelt. The temperature was absolutely PERFECT!!! It was a hot day and I didnβt want to leave the water. The current isnβt too strong, and itβs not too deep. I waded about halfway out before I realized I might fall over if Iβm not careful. There are times where I know I am living the dream and love doesnβt even come close to describing how I feel about my beautiful new city!
The best part: it was incredible to see all these families and kids having fun. I have felt sorry for kids during this pandemic because they have all this energy and need to play and do kiddie things. Additionally, I wasnβt worried about COVID-19 there because honestly, I feel safer around families than I would at the Calgary Stampede at this time. At the end of the day, I was pleasantly tired. Getting out more has made my well-being level go UP!!

See you at the next park in my challenge! 70 parks left!
This sounds like a fun time and I love being able to see these wonderful places thanks to your posts!
It was one of those times that was so relieving mentally after being in a pandemic for over a year! Thanks for commenting π
I so understand that!
Beautiful park and beautiful photos!!! Sounds like such an ideal day in the sun. Your challenge makes me want to do the same in my city β though we definitely donβt have 73 parks β probably 10.
Thank you. It was an incredible day! Iβm sure thereβs some way to explore your city too. Thanks for reading and following my blog! π
Itβs amazing that there is a park of this size so close to a major city like Calgary. I understand how cool water can provide energy in hot weather. Nice job exploring the city.
Thank you. Yeah, it was an amazing park to go and chill out at. Plus it warmed my heart to see all these families having fun. Thanks for commenting π
Thereβs no better way to beat the heat than by being near and in the water. This looks like a lovely park to enjoy in the summer and I bet wading in the water felt refreshing. Glad to hear youβre enjoying Calgary. Iβd much prefer to spend the day in nature as opposed to being around all the crowds from the Stampede too!
I agree about beating the heat by the river! Although, there is that thing that sun reflection can make it feel hotter at times. It was definitely great to see some parks during Stampede time. The Stampeders shouldnβt get to have all the fun! Thanks for commenting π
Wow, are you going to do rafting? I used to do it in Pennsylvania and I really enjoyed it. Wish you a great time. Yes, I often feed the Canadian geese in our park here, which are not strictly allowed, but I feel that I donβt want to waste the bread that I canβt finish and the geese may need more food to make them stronger. LOL.
Iβm not going to raft this year because my mother has mobility issues and I donβt want to do it alone. But next year should be better! Itβs actually not recommended to feed geese bread. Itβs just like us if we eat too much white flour and sugar. So, I donβt feed the geese here. Thanks for commenting!
Sandy Beach Park sounds like a great getaway. I havenβt gone wading in a river since my Guyana days. Itβs wonderful that you and your Mum are able to spend this time together π
It was incredible! Iβm definitely grateful for this time with my Mum. Thanks for commenting π
I havenβt been to Sandy Beach in ages. Glad youβre getting out to see all these Caglary gems.:) Maggie
Iβm glad I took advantage of the nice days too. Hope youβre managing okay with the smoke situation here. I couldnβt believe how the fire last night basically blocked out the city views. Thanks for commenting π
Weβre in the mountains right now and it has been really bad here too. Hoping for the fires to settle down and the winds to change direction.
Oh wow! Yeah, I am also hoping for rain. I am glad this isnβt nearly as bad as I have experienced in California though, but I am still staying smart about it. Take care!
It sounds like a great place to relax and unwind. Iβm glad that youβre having a great weather.
Itβs so incredible! I wasnβt expecting it to be so awesome! Thanks. Although, Calgary weather keeps you on your toes lol
having fun in the park in summer good going enjoy the summer
I will! Thanks for commenting π
I like that suspension bridge! A cold crick sounds good on a hot desert day.
You do get some suspension bridges around Calgary. I wouldnβt call it cold per se. Itβs hard to describe a perfect river temperature
Always good to get out. How is your smoke level today. We are currently at a 10, not good to be outdoors and you can not even open a window, even though it has cooled off. Have a good Sunday. Allan
The smoke is better today, but there has been a lot of wind around. Weβre still staying in because we know the effects it can have on us. I know this isnβt saying much, but this is nowhere NEAR as bad as what I have experienced in California, especially last year! I was struggling to catch my breath then. Hope youβre staying healthy too and thanks for commenting π
πππ Enjoy the beautiful weather!
Thank you! Itβs so much better than I ever thought it would be. Thanks for commenting π
